Overview
The idea behind the International Workshop is to offer quality tutoring, creating an ongoing dialogue between young artists of many nationalities. Our intention is to break down preconceived or stereotypical ideas of identity, culture and nationality, and we hope that the artistic collaboration among our students can help create a deeper understanding between different cultures.
The profile of a typical student on the International Workshop is that of a young person aged between 19 and 35 years of age, holding a degree in Fine Art, Design, Architecture or similar. This could also be a person with some experience in art (min. A-levels) who is preparing entry to higher art or design education (graduate or port-graduate). Students come from a variety of countries, giving the course its distinctive international atmosphere.
The methodology of the course does not simply consist in teaching techniques or providing students with knowledge about materials and ways of working. At Metáfora, we believe that the practice of contemporary art requires time for reflection and debate, and most of our programme circles around the term "artistic intention". Our students are expected to posses a large amount of self-discipline and maturity, as well as some basic knowledge regarding different techniques.
Due to the way we teach at Metáfora, this course should not be considered as ‘beginners' level. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, but we expect them all to have some previous experience from other art courses.
Eligibility
It is difficult to determine the “official” level of the International Workshop, and it would be fair to say that the course structure is rather unique in this respect. The admission panel values previous experience in art and a minimum of A-Level Secondary Education, as well as a minimum age of 18 years. There is no superior age limit, and mature students are very welcome.
As for the level of techniques taught, most of our workshops are introductory, and are meant as “appetizers” to further investigation by the student. It is our experience that however well trained a student may be, there are always new materials and techniques to be learned. This practice implies, however, that the student knows how to perform individual further investigation in art, and this is where we value personal and artistic maturity, something which is not necessarily acquired by posing a university degree. We celebrate diversity, both in terms of culture and nationality as well as in experience and age. It is our experience that the more diverse the student population – on all levels -, the better the course.

Spanish residency reduction: Spanish nationals obtain a 30% reduction (copy of passport or DNI should be attached to the application form). This reduction cannot be added to the Metáfora Award Scheme.
Dates
Applications are accepted throughout the year.
Due to the increasing number of applications to the International Workshop, Metáfora has had to create "waiting lists" for some courses. Future students are accepted on the course in the order in which Metáfora receives their applications, giving preference to students who wish to stay for the entire year. In order to assure future students a place on the course, we recommend students to apply several months in advance.
Staying in a different country or city can be a rich and intense experience. We strongly recommend that foreign students stay at Metáfora for a whole academic year (autumn and spring terms) in order to fully benefit from their time in Barcelona. Students who choose a whole academic year at Metáfora will have preference at the moment of applying. However, students who wish to study at Metáfora for only one term (autumn or spring) can state so in the application form ("other periods"), and will be taken into consideration.
