Overview
Prague offers a fascinating social and cultural setting for service-learning. After more than 15 years of transition from Soviet Communism to independence and receiving its new status as a member of the European Union, the Czech Republic is still struggling with the consequences of the privatization of political, social, educational, and cultural institutions. Service-learning in Prague will allow you to directly encounter the problems, challenges, and attempted solutions brought about by these changes, while also giving you a chance to enjoy the historical and cultural offerings of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities—Prague.
You will spend a semester or year in Prague, studying Czech culture and society at historic Charles University, living with a Czech family, and engaging in substantive volunteer service responding to social needs. Taught in English, the studies are linked closely with your service and your experience of living in and learning about historic and contemporary Czech and Central European social, cultural, ecological, political, and economic issues. Your volunteer service immerses you in the culture and deepens your understanding of Czech society in a way that goes beyond that experienced in traditional study abroad programs.
