Overview
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is committed to encouraging UK-based students to spend time abroad as part of their studies in order to equip them with the skills and awareness necessary to live and work effectively in the global economy. It is especially important that students engage with China – one of the world largest and fastest growing economies and a country which will have increasing global importance in the years to come.
The University of Manchester is appointed as the management agent for the DfES China Summer School Programme for 2007. The Programme will be delivered through a partnership between the University of Manchester and Beijing Normal University. The three-week programme will take place in Beijing in July and August offering students to learn the Chinese language, to explore the rich cultural heritage and contemporary China, and to interact with young Chinese people through job shadowing and social events. 200 funded places are available for 2007 and 20 Widening Participation Bursaries are also in place for qualified candidates.
The three-week programme includes 40 contact hours of language learning in small classes at different levels. Students will be assessed and placed into different classes according to their language proficiency. All the teaching will be delivered by experienced and qualified staff of Beijing Normal University. Students will be able to use the language as they are learning and be able to get around with newly acquired language skills. For those who already have some basic Chinese, they will be able to improve their proficiency to more advanced level.
The programme offers cultural trips in and around Beijing including an overnight stay in a folk village, living the same life as Chinese farmers for a weekend. Participants will have opportunities to discover traditional Chinese living in lanes and courtyards, which, to some extent, have influenced the way of thinking of Chinese people. Other cultural traditions such as Beijing Opera, Acrobatics and calligraphy, Tai Chi are also built into the programme.
Participants will be visiting local companies and in some cases, even job shadowing and attend talks by Chinese and British entrepreneurs. This will give students the first insight into the business world and opportunities to think how they may wish to engage with China in the future.
This programme is open to all undergraduate students registered with an English university by the time application is received and the deadline for application is 15th June 2007.
