Overview
You'll fly into either Auckland (North Island) or Christchurch (South Island) and then take a direct flight to Queenstown on the west coast of the South Island in a beautiful mountain alpine environment. Placements begin with an intensive 5-day orientation, designed to introduce you to New Zealand custom and culture, the hospitality industry, employment relations, and help you set up all of the incidental accounts and information you need to know about. You can join in the many campus activities and meet like-minded students studying in the same programs.
Internship Placements and Pay
Placements are typically available in hotels, lodges, resorts, cafes, and restaurants. Limited placements are available at ski resorts, jet boat operators, bungee jumping locations, and other adventure-type activities. You'll work up to 40 hours per week with variable schedules, and usually have two consecutive days off. The stipend is approximately US$1400 (NZ$1920) per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
Sample placements includeinclude front office, housekeeping, bar or food and beverage in a hotel, and customer service positions for a tourism operator.

Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Any agreements for academic credit should be made between the student and his/her university prior to the internship.
Eligibility
Interns must:
* Be U.S., Canadian, Australian, or European Union citizens
* Be between 18 and 29 (Working Holiday Visa) or up to 35 if on a Student Trainee Visa (if an internship is a required part of your studies)
* Have work experience in the hospitality industry or, current student in the area
* Provide references
* Commit to an internship of at least 3 months (up to 6 months)
* Begin the Intern Placement on a listed date

Some hotels offer room and board but the majority do not. Once you begin your intern program you will begin earning a stipend to help offset housing and other expenses

The InterExchange Foundation's Working Abroad Grant is intended to defray the costs of transportation, participation fees, travel insurance, housing, and meals related to a work, internship, or volunteer abroad program. Recipients must submit a written report to InterExchange upon completion of their program, describing how the grant allowed them to gain international understanding through working abroad. Awards may cover the program fee and up to $2,000 toward additional expenses.
