Overview
Intercultural Encounters Study Abroad Program 2008 is a comprehensive four weeks program that includes acreditted academic courses, cultural activities and community service. Courses include: multiculturalism and interculultural communication, international relations- diplomacy and international business. The program will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from 23rd July- 19th August 2008.

Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.  All courses are fully accredited and worth 3 US or 6 ECTS credits tranferrable to the universities worldwide, if the prior approval has been obtained.

Eligibility
The program is open to undergraduate students from around the world who have taken at least one year of university/ college courses.

The cost of tuition is 2950 USD

Costs Include:  The program costs include: tuition, housing, breakfast, fieldtrips, workshops, community service projects and cultural activities.

Financial Aid
Yes. A limited number of scholarships may be available. To apply for a scholarship please fill-out the applicable section on the application. Please note that we are unable to provide full tuition scholarships to any student, and under no circumstances can we provide funds for travel. We encourage students to find outside funding and we can provide a letter of support for you.

The Intercultural Encounters is a comprehensive four-week program that includes: university courses, cultural activities, and community service. The program is open to undergraduate university students from around the world.

University Courses:

We offer specially designed courses which focus on issues of global importance. Each course is both interactive and challenging.

- Multiculturalism
Participants will obtain an introduction to intercultural communication, cultural understanding, and other cultural issues in cross-cultural interactions. This course is mandatory for all participants.

In addition, each participant has to take one other course:

- Globalization and Development

or

- International Relations- Diplomacy

All courses are taught in English and are fully accredited. Transcripts are issued by Union University, Serbia. Each course is worth 3 US/6 ECTS semester credits. Credits can be transferred upon approval from the student's home university.



Cultural Activities and Field Trips:

Expose yourself to a new culture. We offer weekly cultural activities. Experience the City of Belgrade - visit its museums, summer music festival and famous Belgrade's night life at some of the raft boats along Danube.

We will embark on several tours throughout your stay to better acquaint you with the exciting country that will be your home for the next few weeks. We will be visiting Serbian's countryside during teambuilding activities and community service project, staying in one of the latest untouched nature's spots in Europe.

Later, in the program raise your awareness of human tragedy by visiting monumental Kragujevac, the place where hundreds of students where taken from their class and were executed by Germans in one day, during WWII.



Community Service:

Work with members of the Serbian community on service projects. These activities are not only rewarding, but allow you to put theory into practice. Get to know Serbs involved in community work and find out more about projects they work on.

Enjoy highly exciting "city rally" and " DISC - Personality profile workshop". Learn practical skills, such as public speaking techniques, cross cultural negotiating, how to write business plans, and, most importantly, how to create and implement a project in your home community. . Housing:

Students will be housed in a dormitory located in the heart of the city. The rooms are twin and triple share basis and are comfortable, clean and safe. All rooms have private bathroom and small kitchen. They have been carefully selected to maximize your experience abroad. The dorm also has a TV room, laundry facilities and is in walking distance to main city attractions and night clubs. In addition, you make take buses, trams and trolleybuses that will safely get you to your destination. Internet access will be available Students will share a room with one or two other students depending on living preferences and room availability. Students will be matched per request or by interests.



Meals:

Breakfast is included in the costs of the program. During the team building and community service retreat, all meals are included. Students have several options for the remaining meals, choosing to cook with friends at the dorm or eat out. The cost of food in Serbia is very low (an average meal with main dish, side dish, drink, and tip costs around 3 - 5 USD). Students can eat at any number of restaurants around the campus, dorm, or city center.



Transportation:

Belgrade has a reliable and inexpensive public transportation system consisting of buses, trams and trolleybuses.



Free Time:

Student will have free afternoons and weekends. There should be enough time for exploring the sights of Belgrade and visiting nearby villages, cities. You could even take weekend trips to neighboring countries! Serbia is situated near Hungary, Austria and Greece and it would take you only a few of hours to reach Budapest or you may take an overnight train to visit Athens and Vienna. Yet, we would recommend exploring the sights of Serbia’s beautiful countryside. There are many historical cities and sights as well as national parks that would surely amaze you. Besides cultural sights Serbia is determined to base its tourist activities on culture and natural beauty.

The cost of tuition is 2950 USD and includes: tuition, housing, breakfast, fieldtrips, workshops, community service projects and cultural activities. Due to our commitment to accessibility, we strive to minimize tuition in all of our non- profit programs.

A non-refundable deposit is due two weeks after the invitation is received or by May 1, 2008 at latest. It is required to secure a spot in program. Remaining amount is due by June 15, 2008. Payment plans can be arranged. The price of the program does not include airfare.

Please consult your home university for funding opportunities. A large percentage of participants receive funding from their home university to attend our program.

Applications are being accepted and reviewed on a rolling admission basis, as long as space remains.

Simply fill-out the on-line application. Participants are selected based on the quality of their application and essay.

Applications are being accepted on a rolling admission basis and are reviewed weekly, meaning the sooner you apply to sooner you will receive the admission decision. We encourage all persons to apply early. Finalists may be contacted for a phone interview and/or to submit official transcripts and letters of recommendation.
