A five-week summer program focusing on area studies, Contemporary Russia offers courses in Russian culture, politics, and economics; all content-based classes are taught in English by faculty of the State University: Moscow Higher School of Economics, one of Russia's most prestigious centers for the study of social sciences. Program participants also receive six hours per week of elementary Russian language instruction. (Participants with prior training in Russian who wish to join the program will be provided instruction at the appropriate level; we are able to accommodate participants at all proficiency levels.)
The academic program also incorporates weekly working-group meetings with fellow participants to promote lesson planning and curriculum development for area-studies courses taught in U.S. elementary and secondary schools. Other program features include room and board with Russian families or in university dormitories; weekly cultural excursions; a full-time U.S. resident director; eight semester-hours of academic credit through Bryn Mawr College; and pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C.
