Overview
The Life Plan project seeks to transform the lives of teachers, students, and families caught in the cycle of violence.
Fundacion CEPPA/ILEP (Center for Peace Studies and the Latin American Institute for Peace Studies of the University for International Cooperation) is collaborating with the Costa Rican Ministry of Education to implement a program in 50 at-risk high schools in the country. This project is open 2008-2011, year round.
All students are required a 42 hour training in Creative Conflict Resolution and Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), two Quaker-originated programs. After this training, students/volunteers/interns are assigned to a high school at any part of the country, according to need.
Practically all careers are welcome: peace studies, arts, music, social work, sociology, psychology, education, ESL, economics, fine arts, statistics, graphic arts; public health and nutrition students are also welcome.
Applications accepted for students (summer or semester, credit available), interns, and volunteers (12 weeks and longer).
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Masters degree recognized by many Academic Institutions in the US and Europe. Inquiries for a particular college/university should be made directly by e-mail.
Eligibility
Minimum age: 18. Other requirements: serious, self-disciplined, highly committed persons. Three character letters of reference.
Housing/Accommodation

Applicants should be aware private bathrooms are not usually available in the housing facilities.
Program Costs
Four weeks: $2500; Additional week: $150.
Costs
Include: This includes: Service learning, Spanish tutoring, Spanish language materials, cultural program, airport transportation, local transportation. Home stay includes: private bedroom, breakfast, dinner and laundry service.
Group health and life insurance available at additional cost.
Dates
Program is designed to run 2008-2011, year round. Applicants may join at any time of the year.
