Overview
Next offering . . . Summer 2009!
This summer institute allows students to experience first-hand the art and culture of ancient Rome (700 B.C. – 400 A.D.) both within the modern city and in other parts of Italy. Emphasis will be on visiting sites occupied by the Etruscans and ancient Romans and on learning about their culture through museum visits and on-site lectures. Attention will also be paid to studying the monuments of the ancient city amidst their current surroundings from the Medieval, Baroque, and Fascist periods.
On-site visits within Rome will include the Colosseum, where the Romans gathered to watch gladiatorial combat and other spectacles, the Palatine Hill, where emperors and aristocrats lived in luxury, and the Pantheon, a temple whose dome is a feat of engineering genius. Day trips out of Rome will include visits to the tombs of ancient Etruria, the port city of Ostia, and the expansive villa of the emperor Hadrian at Tivoli. We will also spend four days on the Bay of Naples exploring the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as other opulent villas that were destroyed by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. Museum visits will include the Vatican Museum in Vatican City and the National Archaeological Museums of both Naples and Rome.
In addition to reading in ancient and modern sources about the cultural, historical, and archaeological background of the sites we visit, students will be expected to prepare in advance at least one report about a monument or artwork or their choice, which they will present on site in Italy. Participation is limited to 15 students. Students will have some afternoons and all evenings free to explore modern Rome and its plentiful cultural offerings.
