Overview
Do you want to learn the Lao language, Lao history, and Lao culture? What better way to do it than to spend your summer fully immersed in Lao society in Laos.

Participants will get an opportunity to study at the Lao-American College in Vientiane, the capital of the Lao PDR. The Summer Study Abroad in Laos program (SAIL) consists of four components:

1) An intensive Lao language course;
2) A Lao history and culture course or an elective course (in English);
3) A volunteer work program with an international nongovernmental organization (NGO); and
4) Cultural excursions throughout the country.

Participants will spend four hours a day in classroom training and four hours a week in volunteer work at one of a number of cooperating international NGOs. In addition, they would have the opportunity to take part in cultural excursions arranged by the program. Students will also be paired up with a Lao student to further improve their speaking skills and their listening comprehension. A highly qualified Program Leader will accompany the students to Laos and would be available to assist participants during the entire program period.

Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.  Students will have an opportunity to earn up to six college credits. The Lao-American College will issue a transcript to students who have successfully completed their Lao language, history and culture courses; and SAIL will offer the student a certificate upon program completion. Credit transfers are subject to prior approval from the student’s home institution. Please check with your advisor, professors, and the study abroad program department at your college or university first.
