Overview
An academic program for students in grades 9-12 held in Montpellier, France. Students choose from a wide range of courses - from International Law to Photography - taught in English, as well as French language and advanced immersion courses. However, knowledge of French is not required to attend the program.
Situated in the beautiful, historical, and culturally rich city of Montpellier, this distinctive program allows students to live in an authentically French city - one where they can feel fully integrated in French life and where they can interact with native French speakers in order to accelerate their language learning. Montpellier's world renowned university, spectacularly diverse architecture, and vibrant street life - not to mention the Mediterranean culture and pace of life all make it an ideal place for high school students to spend the summer and invest themselves intellectually.
Every day, guided tours and activities are organized so that students become familiar with their surroundings. Teachers and guides lead them through the city's maze of winding streets and the picturesque squares and boulevards on which they converge. Montpellier's cultural resources are extensive: the Musée Fabre is considered to house one of France's most important public collections of art and features internationally significant exhibitions such as the one on American Impressionism in 2007; the Musée Languedocien contains treasures of the Languedoc region from prehistory to the present; the Opéra Berlioz is renowned for its acoustics and its national orchestra. Despite the fact that much of the city was destroyed by the Wars of Religion, the striking Saint-Pierre Cathedral dates back to the 14th century, and a 12th-century crypt has been restored to house the Museum of the City of Montpellier.
Given the setting, we seek to emphasize and encourage Francophone activities. Each summer we create a French Table at the dining hall, where students come together with faculty to speak French, regardless of level, and to exchange views on daily life. Prior to the summer, we invite all interested students to request a room on a French-speaking hall if they wish to converse in French on a daily basis.
Eligibility
Participants must be 15-18 years old, but we welcome students from all over the world. Each year, students from dozens of countries join with students from the United States and Canada to create truly diverse programs in spectacular locations. In 2008, a full fifth of all our students came from outside the United States.
Housing/Accommodation

Dormitory
L’Académie de France is housed in the Lycée Notre Dame de la Merci, a boarding school in the historic heart of Montpellier, with the city’s most charming streets, public gardens, museums, and monuments located minutes from our door. The school itself dates from the 16th-century and consists of modern buildings surrounding a beautiful courtyard where students can meet with their teachers, relax with friends, and take meals in the outdoor dining area.
We house boys and girls in separate staircases. The majority of our faculty and staff live in the dorms with the students, so there are adults available to monitor and counsel 24 hours a day. All students must be quiet and in their own rooms by midnight on our high school and continental programs.
