Location:
Rabat - Morocco
Language of Instruction: English
Overview
We currently offer two volunteer sports placements in Morocco. One focuses solely on soccer while the other deals with both soccer and basketball. This project works with young people in sports clubs, which have been set up within poor areas of Rabat to help encourage local children to take up sports.
Many of the children who attend the sports clubs have not been to school or started at a late age. The clubs provide an alternative to hanging around the streets and often help the children to avoid getting involved in drugs.
Coach Soccer to Children in Morocco with Projects Abroad
Football Coaching
Our soccer project in Morocco is based in the south west of Rabat city in an area called Yacoob Mansour. The soccer program is for both girls and boys during the mornings and afternoons and just for boys in the evenings when further coaching takes place from 7pm onwards. When you get to Morocco, you will be introduced to the children and the project coordinator who will arrange a timetable of work for you.
This placement may also involve helping with some soccer matches or coaching sessions during the weekends. According to your motivation and skills you may be asked to assist in team selection and if you are a good player yourself you might even be asked to be on the bench for weekend or evening local matches.
The local staff at the project are keen for volunteers to also help the children with homework, or basic lessons.
Coach Soccer and Basketball in Morocco
Sports in Morocco
The second sports placement focuses primarily on soccer and basketball, though some volleyball is played too. Volunteers can choose to focus on one sport or a combination. The project is located in Sale in the north east of Rabat in an area called Hay Nbyat.
The project works with girls and boys aged between 6 and 16. The children will therefore have a range of abilities but you will have the support of the local staff and your very presence will help to make each training session fun which is vital to maintaining the interest and enthusiasm of the children.
Volunteers can work in both the mornings and afternoons, but should be finished by 5.30pm.
Highlights: Historically, Morocco has been a crossing point for travelers, migrants and traders from all over Africa, Europe and the East. Such diverse influences have contributed to an amazing richness and complexity in cultural life, from art to architecture, music to cuisine. Morocco has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines and many of the large towns are also coastal, including the fabulous trading cities of Casablanca, Agadir and Rabat. Inland, on the edge of the Atlas Mountains, lie the equally enticing towns of Fιs, Marrakesh and Meknθs.
For your accommodation, you'll live with a host-family. All the families involved are extremely supportive of Projects Abroad and are eager to experience an inter-cultural exchange so they can learn more about the lives of volunteers.
This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.
