Overview
Ariège Arts offers documentary film-making courses on location in the French Pyrenees, an area rich in history and outstanding natural beauty. Amongst stunning landscapes and fascinating people create your own short documentaries on subjects including Cathar castles, rock climbing, wine production and working artists.
The residential courses of 2 or 6 days are designed to give people of all abilities the experience of producing films that adhere to the standards of television documentaries. Whether a beginner or someone with a limited knowledge of film-making, refine your skills through project productions that emphasise the virtue of working to a narrative. Tuition is provided by an award-winning broadcast professional film-maker.
These courses provide for hands-on learning about the making of documentary films. From directing action for a sequence, interviewing techniques, the role of sound, to the power of commentary - experiencing the full production process gives an opportunity to understand how creating dynamic, informative documentaries is as much about the interaction between film-maker and subject as it is about writing and technical skills.
Participants can bring a camera/camcorder or use the professional camera kit available at Ariège Arts, working within a crew or by themselves sharing facilities. Editing techniques are explored in depth using Avid Xpress, including pacing of picture cuts and the creation of a powerful soundtrack, good examples of what can transform the impact of a final cut. Translation is available for interviews with local people.
Schedules are busy but plenty of time is allowed for breaks and the evenings are kept free to enjoy local restaurants.
Ariège Arts has been established as a centre for creativity and learning in the arts and produces documentaries that promote and celebrate the history, culture and life of south-west France. The broadcast professional techniques taught during the film courses will enhance your ability and confidence to produce entertaining and stimulating documentaries wherever you live.
